■ Course Overview This 3‑hour cultural walk explores two spiritually significant shrines at the northern foot of Mt. Fuji: Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine and Araya Yama Shrine. Together, they form one of the most meaningful routes for understanding Fuji’s ancient mountain worship and its deep mythological heritage. ■ Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine At Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine, you will walk beneath towering cedar trees along one of the most impressive sacred approaches in the region. Your guide explains the shrine’s role in early Fuji worship, the meaning of its principal deities, and the symbolism of the forest and its immense torii gate. You will also encounter the unusual pair of Tengu guardians near the worship hall—figures rarely seen at Sengen shrines. ■ Araya Yama Shrine At Araya Yama Shrine, you will visit a quieter mountain sanctuary dedicated to Oyamatsumi, the deity of mountains and nature. Today, the shrine is also known as a place where people pray for prosperity, stability, and success.
